Xiaomi is reportedly moving forward with its first proprietary Xiaomi’s mobile chipset, according to multiple industry sources and recent leaks. The Chinese smartphone maker is said to have reached the tape-out stage for its custom SoC as of October 2024, with the chip expected to enter production sometime in 2025. Unlike many domestic competitors, Xiaomi appears to have secured access to a more advanced manufacturing process, selecting Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) 4nm N4P node—a surprising move given the current geopolitical landscape and export control policies.

Reports from earlier in 2024 had suggested that Xiaomi was exploring a 3nm chip design, with an internal target of bringing the processor to market in 2025. However, more recent updates indicate that the initial release will use the slightly older but still efficient N4P process. According to a report from Wccftech, the upcoming silicon will not include custom CPU cores, unlike recent Qualcomm designs that have begun shifting to semi-custom or fully custom architectures. Instead, Xiaomi’s SoC will rely on standard ARM designs, including Cortex-X925, Cortex-A725, and Cortex-A520 cores.

A new leak from a Weibo post by Fixed Focus Digital, a source with a mixed track record, claims that the chipset will also feature an integrated GPU developed by Imagination Technologies. The GPU, reportedly the IMG DXT 72-2304, is said to outperform Qualcomm’s Adreno 740 in certain workloads. The Adreno 740 was introduced with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in late 2022 and has served as a reference point for flagship mobile graphics performance since then.

While Xiaomi has not officially confirmed any specifications or release timeline for its custom chip, several analysts and industry observers have commented on the possibility of a late 2025 launch. Given the projected performance levels, many expect this first-generation chip to offer capabilities on par with Qualcomm’s original Snapdragon 8 series, which debuted in late 2021.

Skepticism remains around some of the claims being circulated. For instance, Jukanlosreve, a social media personality who follows semiconductor leaks, expressed doubts about Xiaomi using the N4P process. Responding to the speculation, tech commentator Mochamad Farido Fanani remarked that some sources are known to make unreliable predictions, noting that Fixed Focus Digital “always guesses blindly.”

Despite the mixed signals, Xiaomi’s move toward in-house chipset development follows a broader trend among major smartphone manufacturers. Apple and Google have already established custom silicon programs to optimize performance and software integration. For Xiaomi, achieving similar independence could offer long-term benefits, especially in areas like AI acceleration, imaging pipelines, and power efficiency—areas where off-the-shelf chipsets may not fully align with company goals.

As 2025 approaches, more details are likely to emerge about Xiaomi’s chip ambitions. Until then, the company appears to be keeping its plans under wraps, possibly waiting for a strategic moment to reveal its next steps in mobile hardware development.

There’s no unnecessary bloatware, which is a big plus, and the level of customization is impressive. You can tweak the UI extensively, from animated wallpapers to system-wide effects, fonts, and Always-On Display settings. Everything looks well-integrated, and unlike some heavily skinned Android versions, MyOS 14 feels polished rather than overwhelming. If you prefer a more stock-like experience, you can ignore most of the extra features without them getting in the way.

The customizable switch on the side adds an extra layer of convenience. It can be mapped to functions like muting notifications, launching the flashlight, camera, voice recorder, or even opening the gaming space app. On top of that, nubia has included a few extra navigation tools like Z-Pop (a shortcut pop-up), ZSmart SideBar (an edge-activated menu), and floating windows for multitasking. The overall experience remains smooth and responsive, ensuring that whether you take advantage of these additions or stick to the basics, the phone won’t feel cluttered or overcomplicated.

With AI-driven power management, the device significantly reduces overnight battery drain, making it more efficient than its predecessor. In real-world usage, the phone easily lasted beyond a full day on a single charge, even with moderate to heavy usage. This is a notable improvement over many flagship smartphones, which often struggle to maintain such longevity under similar conditions.

Despite the increased battery capacity, nubia has retained the 80W fast charging, ensuring quick top-ups when needed. In our tests, the device reached 33% in just 10 minutes and achieved a full charge in 42 minutes—impressive for a battery of this size. With nearly 13.5 hours of screen-on time, the Z60 Ultra Leading Version is a powerhouse for users who prioritize long-lasting performance without compromising on charging speed. Whether you’re gaming, streaming, or working on the go, this phone minimizes battery anxiety and keeps up with demanding tasks effortlessly.

Conclusion

9.2Expert Score
Flagship-Grade

The nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Version stands out as a smartphone that isn’t afraid to do things differently. From its uninterrupted full-screen design to its powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and a well-optimized camera system, it checks many boxes for enthusiasts seeking both performance and innovation. The under-display camera technology, while impressive, still has room for improvement in seamless integration, but it does contribute to an immersive viewing experience.

Performance-wise, the device delivers flagship-level power, handling demanding games and multitasking with ease. The thermal management holds up well, ensuring sustained performance without excessive heat buildup. On the software side, MyOS 14 keeps things clean and customizable, avoiding unnecessary clutter while offering useful enhancements for power users.

Battery life remains solid, and the inclusion of an 80W fast charger in the box is a welcome touch. The camera system provides excellent results, especially with its 35mm main sensor and well-tuned AI processing. While it may not surpass the absolute best in mobile photography, it holds its own with balanced colors, sharp details, and solid low-light performance.

However, the device isn’t without drawbacks. The lack of wireless charging and an official IP rating may be dealbreakers for some, and its bulky design won’t appeal to those who prefer lighter, more compact smartphones. Additionally, while the full-screen experience is impressive, under-display cameras still lag behind traditional selfie shooters in clarity and consistency.

Overall, the nubia Z60 Ultra Leading Version is a bold flagship that caters to users who prioritize an immersive display, powerful performance, and a versatile camera setup. It’s not a device for everyone, but for those who appreciate its unique design choices and gaming-friendly optimizations, it’s a compelling alternative in the high-end smartphone market.

Leaked information from late last year already indicated that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor delivers strong gaming performance, particularly in handling emulated PC titles within an Android environment. Previous reports suggested that test platforms equipped with this flagship mobile chipset were capable of running A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019) at over 60 frames per second (FPS) and achieved an impressive 160 FPS in Red Dead Redemption’s PC port, originally released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. A newly surfaced video appears to provide further proof of this capability, showcasing the Snapdragon 8 Elite running Red Dead Redemption 2 (2019) on an unnamed mobile device.

The footage, uploaded to Bilibili earlier this week, has drawn the attention of tech enthusiasts and industry observers. The original uploader, who remains unidentified, recorded the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 operating on a mobile platform powered by Qualcomm’s latest high-end SoC. According to follow-up discussions in various forums, the game was running via Winlator, an Android-based emulation application designed to enable PC gaming on mobile hardware.

Due to the low-resolution nature of the video, it is difficult to analyze the precise graphical fidelity of the emulated game. However, the uploader noted that the game was set to “low graphical settings.” On-screen performance metrics suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Elite maintained an average frame rate close to 60 FPS during gameplay. While the footage does not provide complete clarity on resolution or texture settings, the fact that the game is running at a playable frame rate is a notable milestone for mobile hardware.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Specs

Industry analysts have begun comparing the performance of Qualcomm’s latest Adreno GPU to AMD’s Radeon 780M, a widely used integrated graphics solution found in Ryzen Z1 Extreme-based handheld gaming PCs. Early speculation suggests that the Adreno GPU may outperform the Radeon 780M in certain emulated scenarios, though comprehensive benchmarking has yet to be conducted. The ability to run a demanding title like Red Dead Redemption 2 on an Android-powered device—albeit through emulation—points to significant advancements in mobile graphics processing.

While these early tests highlight the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s potential for high-performance gaming, real-world usability remains an open question. Emulation typically introduces compatibility challenges, and factors such as power consumption, thermal management, and input latency can significantly impact the user experience. Furthermore, software optimizations and future updates to emulation platforms like Winlator could influence overall stability and performance.

As mobile chipsets continue to advance, the line between dedicated gaming PCs and high-end smartphones may blur even further. Whether Qualcomm’s latest SoC can consistently deliver high-fidelity PC gaming experiences on Android remains to be seen, but the initial results indicate a promising step forward in mobile computing power.

Xiaomi is reportedly preparing to debut its custom silicon built on a 3nm process as early as next year. If successful, this development could represent a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to establish greater control over its hardware ecosystem. However, uncertainties surrounding production, partnerships, and geopolitical challenges remain key obstacles to Xiaomi’s ambitious endeavor.

The information emerged through a post on Weibo by a user known as a “Mobile phone chip expert,” who has a history of sharing insights related to the semiconductor industry. While Xiaomi’s manufacturing partner for the 3nm chips is not explicitly mentioned, industry speculation suggests that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) could be a contender, given its leadership in advanced process nodes. Samsung Foundry, which also manufactures 3nm chips, could be another potential collaborator.

The decision to adopt the 3nm process highlights Xiaomi’s pursuit of higher efficiency and performance. Advanced manufacturing nodes offer substantial improvements in energy efficiency and computing power, potentially allowing Xiaomi to challenge competitors such as Qualcomm and Apple in the mobile chipset domain.

The Weibo post also indicates that Xiaomi plans to integrate MediaTek’s T90 5G modem into its custom silicon. MediaTek’s latest baseband offerings, including the T830 modem, focus on diverse applications, but details about the T90 remain elusive. This suggests that the T90 could be an unreleased or highly specialized product tailored to Xiaomi’s needs.

If Xiaomi pairs its in-house 3nm chipset with the T90 modem, it could significantly enhance the SoC’s wireless capabilities. This integration could position Xiaomi’s silicon to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G modem, known for its high-speed connectivity and advanced features.

Xiaomi faces multiple challenges as it ventures into custom silicon development. The U.S. government has previously imposed sanctions on Chinese companies, restricting access to critical technologies. Any similar action could complicate Xiaomi’s access to advanced manufacturing technologies or essential components like 5G modems.

Additionally, custom chip development requires substantial investment and expertise. Companies like Apple and Samsung have demonstrated the advantages of vertical integration, but the process demands long-term commitment and resources.

MediaTek has been rapidly advancing its capabilities in recent years. Its Dimensity 9400 chipset, built on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, showcases the company’s readiness to adopt cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. This progress positions MediaTek as a strong partner for Xiaomi, particularly in providing advanced modem solutions.

If MediaTek supplies the T90 modem, it might also benefit from leveraging TSMC’s 3nm process. This collaboration could allow Xiaomi and MediaTek to jointly address competitive pressures from industry leaders like Qualcomm, which has a well-established presence in high-performance mobile SoCs.

While Xiaomi’s move toward custom silicon aligns with broader trends in the industry, many questions remain unanswered. Details about the chip’s architecture, performance capabilities, and production timelines are still speculative. Additionally, the integration of the T90 modem and its compatibility with Xiaomi’s ecosystem will be critical to the project’s success.

For now, the reported collaboration between Xiaomi and MediaTek signals a potentially transformative shift in Xiaomi’s approach to hardware development. If successful, the 3nm custom silicon could reduce Xiaomi’s reliance on third-party suppliers, strengthen its competitiveness in the global market, and set the stage for further innovation in mobile technologies.
